Trump Issues Weekend Time Limit for Hamas to Agree to Gaza Agreement

Gaza Conflict
This detailed peace plan represents the latest bid to halt the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

US President Donald Trump has delivered a time limit to Hamas, requiring them to approve a proposed ceasefire agreement for the Gaza region or else risk extreme repercussions.

Via a message on his online channel on Friday, Trump stated that an agreement must be finalized by 6 PM EST (10 PM GMT) on the coming Sunday.

The outlined agreement calls for an immediate end to hostilities and the freeing within 72 hours of 20 surviving Israel hostages captured by the group—along with the remains of hostages presumed to be dead—in return for a large number of arrested residents.

International intermediaries are believed to be urging the organization for a positive reply to the plan, but a prominent group figure has stated that the militant group is expected to decline it.

"Should this ULTIMATE settlement is not achieved, all HELL, similar to anyone has before seen, will break out against Hamas. WE WILL ACHIEVE CALM IN THE MIDDLE EAST NO MATTER WHAT," Trump wrote in the social media post.

Negotiators have communicated with the leader of the group's combat unit in Gaza, who has signaled that he is opposed to the recent US ceasefire proposal, based on reports.

There is belief that some of the group's political wing in Qatar are open to agreeing to the agreement with changes—but have found their leverage restricted as they lack control over the captives held by the group.

A further hurdle for some in Hamas is that the proposal necessitates them to surrender the entirety of the captives over the first 72 hours of the halt—relinquishing their primary negotiating tool.

Reports suggest to be forty-eight captives presently being detained in the Palestinian territory by the armed faction, only twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Israel's defense forces began a campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas-initiated assault on Israeli territory on 7 October 2023, in which about twelve hundred individuals were killed and two hundred fifty-one others were taken hostage.

A minimum of sixty-six thousand two hundred eighty-eight individuals have been killed in Israeli operations in the territory from that point, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry.
