The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after losing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed online comments about the conservative activist.

The motion against George Abaraonye reached the required super-majority to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.

Contentious Posts

The controversy erupted after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while speaking at a university in the United States.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also said to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students seeming to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion took place over the recent days, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.

Society announcements indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.

The announcement stated that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.

In a statement, the student asserted that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".

His response unequivocally denied that any person appointed by George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.

His comment added that he was "proud and thankful to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Opponents have argued that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The message accused the union of becoming a place where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".

The Oxford Union had previously condemned the student's comments after Kirk's death and stated that concerns filed against him had been referred for official review.

The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with Kirk at the society in May.
