Significant Web Failure Hits Many Sites and Applications

A large-scale internet outage has affected numerous sites and mobile apps around the world, with users experiencing issues accessing the internet due to difficulties at the online infrastructure platform.

The disrupted apps encompass Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-owned operations like its main retail website and the Ring security doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted along with its affiliates Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with further notifications of issues reaching the HMRC website on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, multiple Ring device owners used networks to complain their security devices were malfunctioning.

In the UK alone, notifications of issues on specific apps ran into the tens of thousands for each app.

The company stated that the problem began in the east coast of the US at Amazon Web Services, a unit that provides vital online framework for numerous firms, who rent out capacity on Amazon servers. AWS is the world’s largest cloud computing service.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), the company announced “increased error rates and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the east coast of the United States. The ripple effect was seen to hit services around the world, and the problem monitoring service indicating problems with the corresponding services in various regions.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks web disruptions, also reported a surge in problems on the start of the week, with many of them found in Virginia, the site of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the problems started.
